Giants-Patriots, preseason Week 1: Live updates - Big Blue View

In-game updates

First quarter: The Giants trail, 7-3. Daniel Jones is 6 of 10 for 69 yards. Saquon Barkley has four carries for 13 yards and a reception for six yards.

Shane Lemieux (TOE) will not return. In the broadcast we’re told the Giants were hoping to let Lemieux play some center later.

It doesn’t look like Shane Lemieux has a terrible injury. But you don’t want injuries in a game like this.

The New York Giants opens its preseason Thursday night (7 pm ET/NFL Network and NBC-4), marking the sideline debut of Brian Daboll as the team’s head coach.

Use this post as your discussion thread and to keep live updates during the game.

Seeing old friends

Daboll’s debut comes against Bill Belichick, a mentor and former employer, and friend and for Giants head coach Joe Judge, who Daboll replaced. He doesn’t get sentimental.

“I haven’t thought about it yet. I’m so focused on trying to get things right every day. Obviously he is [Belichick is] mentor of mine, but I didn’t sit there and say, ‘Oh, this is the first game,’” Daboll said. “I know my wife and kids will try to get out of it. But what has he coached, 750 games? This is the first preseason game for me. I’m just trying to do right by my team. Not really worried about me.”

The fact that Judge is on the other side as the New England quarterbacks coach and offensive assistant could be a little awkward for some of the guys on the roster who have played for him the last two years. Again, it’s not something Daboll cares about.

“I didn’t even deal with it. You’ve been in this league long enough, where I’ve coached against friends, players, coaches. It’s like you get used to it, you know?,” Daboll said. “To be in the league as long as I’ve been, like, I know 10 other guys on this staff, I’ve worked with four of them, or I was in this place last year and I’m going to this place. It’s just kind of the nature of the NFL.”

Starters vs. backups

Daboll said all healthy Giants starters will play.

“I think that’s important to play football: to have live representatives. How many repetitions that will be, I can’t tell you right now,” said Daboll. “I think it will be less for some and more for others, and every game will have a plan going into it. I look forward to all our guys playing on Thursday.”

That won’t be the case for the Patriots, who aren’t expected to play starters.
