Michigan QB JJ McCarthy 'extremely' confident ahead of kickoff: 'I can win football games for this team' - 247Sports

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — JJ McCarthy will make the first start of his Michigan career on Saturday when the Wolverines face Hawaii under the lights at the Big House.

Here’s all he said in a press conference Tuesday previewing the game:

On how he heard about Jim Harbaugh’s QB strategy:

At first, he just told us both that the best player will play and it’s an open competition, and just go out and be us and whatever happens. After the fact, he just gave us the whole rundown of how he doesn’t have a clear, definitive decision on who the guy is going to be, so he’s going to give us opportunities in the first two games.

On how he’s approaching this week as a starter:

I mean, nothing is really different. Right when I walked in the door here, I was always ready to be the guy — click one, game one, whatever it was — and now it just has that peace of mind that I’m going to be there, click one. So it kind of takes away all the worry and indecision going into it and it just builds more confidence, honestly.

On his confidence level going into his first start:

Extremely I mean, being around guys like we have here and being round coaches like we have here, they just fill you with uber confidence. I’ve always been a guy to have extreme confidence in myself and just being around guys like that and being around coaches like that just magnifies it even more.

When he felt he was challenging for the starting role:

I don’t necessarily feel like there was a certain time where I made a push. I just felt like it was steadily getting better every day. Improves one to two to 5% daily. And I was so locked into myself and my improvement and coming back from this injury and all that.

There was no one like, direct, ‘Okay, I’m in front of him’, or anything like that. It was just, I feel like I’m growing. I feel like I stand out with my guys. And so it was constantly.

On if he felt he had done enough to be the starter:

That decision is something beyond my control. And I never really got into the thought process of, ‘Oh, I should be the guy. This is my job. I want it.’ That is not for me to decide. For me to decide what I do every day and how I improve every day is my duty. It has nothing to do with that decision that I’m the man or anything like that.
