Man charged over ‘random’ stabbing of four people on Auckland’s North Shore

A 41-year-old man will appear in Waitākere District Court on Friday charged with one count of assault and four counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

In the space of a few minutes on Thursday morning, four people were stabbed in the normally quiet beach suburb of Murrays Bay, on Auckland’s North Shore.

The alleged attacker ran along a beachside walkway to Mairangi Bay, about a kilometer away, where he was chased down by construction workers from a nearby worksite and apprehended by police at about 11.30am.

On Friday, police said they would like to reassure the community this was an isolated incident.

“People may notice an increased police presence in the Murrays Bay and Mairangi Bay area as the investigation into the incident continues,” the statement read.

Waitematā District Commander Superintendent Naila Hassan said on Thursday afternoon the offender was in custody under police guard at North Shore Hospital.
