One thing that won’t be moving from Overwatch to Overwatch 2 is the loot box. The sequel will be free-to-play. There will be a fresh business model, which includes a seasonal battle pass, but loot boxes won’t be involved.
Blizzard will reveal more details about how cosmetics work before the launch on October 4th. However, the team has clarified a few points. Overwatch commercial lead and vice-president Jon Spector wrote in a Reddit Q&A that all of your credits, Overwatch League tokens and competitive points will transfer to Overwatch 2. You’ll keep all the skins, voice lines, emotes, highlight intros, sprays you have earned too.
Here’s some more good news: you won’t need to spend time taking care of all your unopened loot boxes. Blizzard will open all of them for you automatically before the Overwatch 2 launch. All of the contents will be added to your account.
That’s a relief, since I have hundreds of unopened loot boxes across my various accounts. The fact that the Overwatch team is taking care of them automatically isn’t too surprising. You’ve either earned or paid for loot boxes, and they were never going to simply vanish and take all of their contents into the ether. Still, it’s nice to get some official word on that front.
